A drama of great tenderness, charm and beauty, THE GLASS MENAGERIE is one of the most famous plays of the modern theatre. It was the first major success of Tennessee Williams, winning the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award in 1945, and launching Williams' career as among the best 20th Century playwrights in the world. Semi-autobiographical, The Glass Menagerie is a memory play from the narrator, Tom Wingfield, who lives with his mother, Amanda, and disabled sister, Laura, in a dingy St. Louis apartment. The Wingfields are a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility.  The world of illusion that each character strives to create in order to make life bearable crashes around them with the arrival of the Gentleman Caller.
