Introducing Driving Miss Daisy's Tyrees Allen!
The Repertory Theater of Iowa is bringing actor Tyrees Allen to Des Moines to play the role of "Hoke" in RTI's production of DRIVING MISS DAISY in January. The production will reunite him with RTI company actress Kim Grimaldi. The two starred in a production of the play in2012 in their native of Kansas. "We are very excited that Tyrees Allen is joining us for this production. He will be the first guest artist that RTI has hired outside of central Iowa," says RTI Artistic Director, Brad Dell.
Born and raised in Salina, Kansas, Mr. Allen graduated with a degree in Theatre Arts from Marymount College in Salinas before embarking on his professional career. He has appeared in a wide range of roles on stage, screen, and television. On Broadway, Mr Allen played Amonasro in the Tony Award winning production of Aida and Westmoreland in the Broadway revival of Henry IV (winner of that year's Tony Award for Best Revival). He has also played Colin Powell in the American premier of David Hare's Stuff Happens at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles; Aegisthus in the world premier of Timberlake Wertenbaker's new translation of Sophocles' Electra at The Getty Villa Theatre in LA; and the title role in Othello at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, for which he won The Dramalogue Critics' Award. Earlier this year, Mr. Allen played Mr. Chuck in the world premier of Jonathan Norton's powerful new play Mississippi Goddamn at the South Dallas Cultural Center, and this past summer, reprised his role in another production of Othello at the Second Thoughts Theatre, also in Dallas.
Mr. Allen has appeared in many roles on television, including regular roles in Womens Murder Club and Dark Blue; the villain Gordon Dean in the last season of Alias; recurring roles in The Practice and Close to Home; and a host of TV guest star appearances, including Revolution, Burn Notice, Scandel, Castle, Without A Trace, Law & Order, Brothers & Sisters, and more. He is featured in the HBO movie The Rat Pack and the cult film The Perfect Host.
Mr. Allen will also be available to speak to youth groups or groups interested in a career in theatre, TV, or film during his tenure in Des Moines. Call the RTI office at 515-421-4543 for more information.
